Traditional Satirical Dance Form of Kerala

Tuesday, 30 January 2018

The Nattika Beach Resort fascinated its guests with an event that has never been shown

before. With a grin on their faces the guests left the partly humorous event Ottamthullal.

Ottamthullal is a special performing art of God’s Own Country, Kerala. According to historical

legends this unique dance was created by famous poets in the 18th century. One of the most

enchanting qualities of “Thullal” is that the performer tells and sings the story itself. To

highlight the variety of gestures and facial expressions, the dance is accompanied by a

                                                                                   Mridangam (ancient Indian percussion instrument)

Since the art form is very satirical, the artist has the freedom, at his discretion, to bring in and integrate humor and satire. This explains his

enormous intercultural popularity. The occasional involvement of the audience in the spectacle makes every performance an individual

experience.
